MAKE THE CALL: Tell Mel Watt it's time to do the right thing

When Mel Watt became director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency in January 2014, we hoped it would be a big step to help homeowners stay in their homes through principal reduction. Thousands of Home Defenders signed petitions asking him to put a temporary halt to foreclosures by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac - the two mortgage giants he oversees - until he could change the mean-spirited rules of his predecessor that prohibited banks from negotiating win-win loan modifications with principal reduction.

Nine months later, he's done next to nothing to reduce foreclosures or negotiate with homeowners.

It's time to call Mel Watt. Tell him he needs to negotiate with homeowners.

MAKE THE CALL: 202-649-3001 or 202-649-3006

If you are routed to someone else, that's okay--we want them to know lots of people are calling! Here's a sample script:

"Hi, I'm calling for Director Watt. My name is ____________ and I'm calling from (city, state). I'm calling because we need Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to stop needless foreclosures, and the best way to do that is through principal reduction. Please change the rules at the FHFA to allow principal reduction and reduce foreclosures.”

Be polite, but be firm. Now is the time for Mel Watt to do the right thing.

When you're done, let us know how it went below!

I’ve called twice and written four times. Their response is pending.

Okay, I rethought remaining un-posted, so here is the addition I added to my script: First, please change the rules at the

FHFA to allow principal reduction, buybacks and rental agreements to reduce foreclosures and evictions. Then push to segregate

legitimate foreclosures from the fabricated, unethical and illegal seizure of personal property by the banks hiding behind FHA and HUD rules! I believe that to continue to pander to the will of the banks will move middle class Americans into modern feudalism and slavery. Please help America, not the banks preying on us!

I left a VM since the two numbers provided went directly to VM.

I called earlier this afternoon. Spoke with a woman who said her name is “Jan”. She listened politely to my speech. I said I wanted to make sure that Mel Watt got my whole message and she said he would.

I called about 3:30p on 10/23/14. I left a message using the sample script on their voice mail leaving my name and contact phone number so that they could give me a call back since their message says that they will return my call when they have the time to do so.

I left a message on one number and actually got a person on the first number. I used and amplified the script, letting her know that in MA, I’ve worked with families in foreclosure facing eviction, who would have and who can benefit from principal reduction. She listened politely and hopefully took notes. She thanked me for my call.

Damn it, I didn’t click here and my report came out under Tony Romano. I left the (hopefully) previous message in which I talked to

woman and told her I wanted my entire message conveyed to him.

I called and asked to speak with Director Watt. Upon being told he was unable to take my call “at the moment” I asked if she would make sure she REALLY conveyed my message to him. I said I was extremely disappointed in him because many people who need him to step up and change the rules at FHFA, thought he was going to do so. I couldn’t understand how he could refuse to stop foreclosures to people who already owned their home and can NOW buy it back. I found it especially troubling and discriminating that he is supporting vulture speculators who have historically DESTROYED neighborhoods, while owner-occupants have helped stabilize them. Person was polite but started to sound edgy near the end. She said, “Is that all?” I said yes but I wanted to make sure Director Watt got my entire message and as I was going to ask for her name I realized she had hung up already.

I called just now and left a message on a machine with the demand around principal reduction and my name, city, state, and phone number. I called from DARE (Direct Action for Rights and Equality) in Providence, RI.

No, the director is not available. Tolerated my “speech”. Yes, I will relay your message. Polite, slightly cold.

I was routed to someone. I told her I lobbied to get Mel Watts as a replacement for previous director hoping he would do the right thing and reduce foreclosures. Instead he has sought the “punitive” route. I requested that he be solution oriented and work to make FM and FMac reduce foreclosures through principal reduction. She said everyone is saying the same message and she will report my message to him. Hayat Imam

I called at 9:10am. The person who answered the phone, said immediately that Mel Watt was not available so I gave her the message and insisted that she pass this message to change the policy now.

I am NOT Tony Romano, but when I clicked on “click here” I got back to your Home page. So here’s what happened with me: I called the first of two number you gave, reached a live person, did a good spiel, including how we’d talked about this “at church yesterday and were really all praying Director Watt would do what we all expected of him when Obama appointed him.” She listened without comment, and then thanked me and said she’d pass the message on. What was interesting was I actually reached somebody on the first try! MARGARET LOBENSTINE

Left message on the answering machine!

A live person answered and transferred me to another line when I said I had a message for Mel Watt. I left a voicemail and received an email response mentioning pilot programs in Detroit and Chicago… but no real response to the URGENT and widespread need for real modification that prevent foreclosures and keep families in their homes by resetting principal to current value.

A woman said she’d give him the message and then hung up on me.

Called both numbers. Left message on 1st. Number, Called second number twice but it beeped twice & cut out
  • commented 2014-10-15 07:58:29 -0700
I called the first number above and left a recorded message, explaining how important it is in Detroit to keep people in their homes and prevent further “blight” using principal reduction of inflated mortgages.
  • commented 2014-10-15 07:50:23 -0700
The woman taking the call listened without interruption to my speel on the need for principal reduction here in Detroit and in other cities stricken by the foreclosure epidemic. She said she would forward the message. Pretty cut and dried.

Classroom of 13 students study Power & Privilege in Detroit made calls and left messages this morning. 3 of us talked to someone and were told our messages were recorded. 9 left messages, and 1 was continually re-routed to the initial menu and was unable to leave a message.

I got voicemail and so I just left a message. I did stress the fact that he has done nothing during his time in this position.
